- Darrell L. Heckman was appointed Magistrate of the St. Paris Ohio Mayor's Court and took up that position in February, 2014.
- On September 22, 2014 the Fifth District Court of Appeals of Ohio granted a new trial to M.S. on her claim that two relatives with knowledge of their father's propensity for child sexual abuse over two generations could be liable to an extended family member age 5, when they remained silent despite knowledge that their father was babysitting the minor child in the same house where he had abused two generations of children.
This case represented an important extension of the law of tort liability and the concept of "special relationship" between the victim and the defendants justifying liability. Darrell L. Heckman represented M.S. on the appeal. There was no further appeal and the case was settled after remand.
