Urbana
attorney Darrell L. Heckman announced that he
is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for
Judge of the Second District Court of Appeals
for the seat currently held by retiring Judge
Thomas Grady. The Second District includes all
of Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami and
Montgomery Counties.
The
Second Appellate District has always had at least
one judge outside of Montgomery County. All current
judges on the court except Judge Grady are from
Montgomery County.
In
making his announcement Heckman said, "I
have practiced trial and appellate law for over
35 years and have handled over 100 appeals in
the second and other Ohio appellate districts,
as well as the Ohio Supreme Court and the Federal
Court of Appeals. An appellate judge must decide
complex issues of criminal, civil, domestic, juvenile,
and probate cases. I have practiced in all of
these areas both at the trial and appellate level.
I have an especially strong background in criminal
law, both as prosecutor and defense counsel."
Criminal
law cases comprise approximately half of the docket
of the Court of Appeals.
Mr.
Heckman served as Prosecuting Attorney of Champaign
County, Ohio from 1989-1997 and has also held

Urbana, Village Solicitor of Christiansburg and

Hearing Officer, and President of the City of
Urbana Charter Review Commission. He is currently
